Less Than Half of Pakistanis Can Read....
An "Education Emergency" has been declared in Pakistan. More than 25 million children are out of school, of which one-third never see the inside of a classroom. Of those that do attend, most drop out by the third grade mainly because of financial restrictions. With a literacy rate of merely 49%, which includes many who can only sign their names, 42 million or 60% of the school-going population has no access to any means of education. Many parents, especially those with more than 5 children, cannot afford to send their children to school (paying for tuition, books, uniform and other supplies). Devastatingly low levels of primary enrollment, the poor quality of education and teachers, and weak physical infrastructure plague the state’s educational system. |
