Qurbani Facts at a Glance

QURBANI FACTS AT A GLANCE…

The tradition of Qurbani honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim alay his salaam - Allah SWT tested Prophet Ibrahim alay his salaam in some very difficult ways - in the last of three tests, Allah SWT asked Ibrahim alay his salaam to sacrifice his son, Ismail for His sake. Ibrahim alay his salaam was obviously heartbroken, but intended to fully comply, at which Allah SWT replaced Ismail with a calf just before the knife was about to touch his neck. Thus, Ibrahim alay his salaam also passed this test of his faith.

Qurbani is performed in the last month of the Islamic calendar, Dhul-Hijjah, after the Eid prayer, and during any of the three days of Eid ul Adha (10th, 11th, and 12th). Qurbani also marks the completion of Hajj.

Qurbani is expected of every able-bodied Muslim who has attained puberty and meets the rules of Zakat. One share of an animal should be sacrificed in each eligible person’s name.

If you are intending to offer Qurbani, it is highly recommended not to purposefully cut your hair or nails during the first nine days of Dhul-Hijjah: “When you see the new moon of Dhul Hijjah, and one of you desires that he offer a sacrifice, then let him keep [not cut] his hair and nails.” - Prophet Muhammad SAWS.

If you have missed your Qurbani obligation during any previous years, you can make up for it by contributing for additional shares this year.
