The Healthcare Crisis in Pakistan

Beating the Odds

As an emerging nation, Pakistan faces multiple challenges when it comes to public health.  These are due primarily to a dearth of resources dedicated towards health solutions as well as a lack of awareness of basic health knowledge.

In Pakistan, 1 in 89 women die due to pregnancy or childbirth-related complications.  Similarly, almost 7 infants out of 100 die before they reach one year of age.  Almost 40 percent of children in Pakistan are malnourished.  Preventable conditions such as malaria, diarrhea, bronchial infections, and gastrointestinal infections abound.

Health indicators suggest that it is the lack of accessible healthcare — not terrorism, drones or the energy crisis — that is the greatest adversity facing Pakistan.  Pakistan spends a shockingly low percentage of its GDP (2.6 percent) on healthcare.  The poor quality of government-provided health services in Pakistan is the major reason behind the large role played by the private sector in healthcare.

HOPE's Solutions

HOPE seeks to remedy the healthcare crisis in Pakistan through its network of Hospitals, Maternal and Child Health Clinics, Basic Health Units, and Mobile Health Units throughout Pakistan.  We aim to provide healthcare in the form of treatments, preventive care, and emergency medicine.  Currently we have four charitable Hospitals, eight Maternal and Child Health Centers, one Basic Health Unit, and two Mobile Health Units.

Our Healthcare Network

HOPE operates a network of Hospitals, Maternal and Child Health Centers, Basic Health Units, and Mobile Health Units throughout Pakistan which provide free/nominal cost healthcare to 750,000 patients per year.  70 percent of our beneficiaries are women/children.

HOPE Neonatal Healthcare

 HOSPITALS

As of 2023, HOPE has established four charitable Hospitals in Pakistan: one in Karachi, one in Thatta, one in Zia Colony, and one in Sujawal.  Each hospital is equipped with surgical facilities, a neonatal intensive care unit, and labor and delivery rooms.  In 2022, over 552,000 patients were seen altogether at all four Hospitals.  Combined, over 10,500 surgeries were conducted and over 6,800 babies were delivered.

HOPE Save Maternal and Infant Lives Kashmir

Maternal and Child Health Centers

HOPE has nine Maternal and Child Health Centers (MCHC’s): Manzoor Colony, Mujahid Colony, Bilal Colony, Korangi 5, Azad Kashmir, Chikaar (Azad Kashmir), Garhi Habibullah (KPK), Mansehra (KPK), and Muzaffargarh, (Punjab).  MCHC’s support women’s obstetric and gynecological services, prenatal care, and family planning services.  Emphasis is placed upon promoting safe deliveries and reducing maternal and infant mortality due to pregnancy-related complications. Yearly, over 120,000 total mothers and children are seen at all eight facilities.

HOPE Village Healthcare

Basic Health Units

HOPE has one basic health unit (BHU) located in HUB, Balochistan.  Altogether it provides emergency services, outpatient services, maternal checkups, and pediatric care to over 40,000 patients per year, mainly women and children.

HOPE Mobile Health Units

Mobile Health Units

HOPE is able to access 20 villages on the outskirts of Karachi via two mobile health units (MHU’s).  Doctors travel from Karachi to staff the MHU’s on a rotational basis.  In 2022, both MHU's provided over 70,000 patients total (mainly women and children) access to basic medical care and emergency services.

Giving Tuesday - A Million Reasons to Give

Dear HOPE Friends, Giving Tuesday 💝 is Today, November 28, 2023! On This International Day Dedicated to Charity, We Invite You to Learn More About HOPE USA 🇺🇸 and How We Are Taking Active Measures to Reduce Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼 and Infant 🧒🏻 Mortality in Pakistan 🇵🇰. Pakistan 🇵🇰 is Projected to Be Fifth in World 🌎 Population by the Year 2050 🗓️. Unfortunately, 25% to 40% of Pakistan's Population is Living Below the Poverty Line 📉. Health indicators 🫀 Suggest that it is the Lack 🚫 of Accessible Healthcare 🏥 — not Terrorism, Drones or the Energy Crisis — That is the Greatest Adversity Facing Pakistan 🇵🇰. When We Examine a Few Basic Statistics 📊, the Reality Becomes All Too Clear. Pakistan 🇵🇰 spends a Shockingly Low Percentage of its GDP - 2.6% on Healthcare 🩺. Preventable Diseases such as Malaria, Bronchial Infections, and Gastrointestinal Issues abound. 40% of Pakistan's children 🧒🏻 are malnourished, and of those, 11% are severely malnourished. Two Subcomponents Within the Raging Healthcare ❤️‍🩹 Crisis are the Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼and Infant 🐣 Mortality Rates: 🔶 According to Unicef, Pakistan 🇵🇰 has the Highest Infant 🧒🏻 Mortality Rate in the World 🌎 - Infants 🧒🏻 Here Face a 1 in 22 chance of Dying Within One Month of Birth, 50 Times That of Their Counterparts in Japan 🇯🇵 and Iceland 🇮🇸. 🔶 Similarly, Pakistan's 🇵🇰 Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼 Mortality Rate Accounts for 28% of the Global 🌎 Total. Every 37 Minutes, One Woman in Pakistan 🇵🇰 Dies Due to Pregnancy-Related Complications - This Amounts to 14,000 Women Yearly 🗓️. In any Society, Poor People turn to Their Governments for Support. However, due to Pakistan 🇵🇰 Being a Developing Country, Both the Quality and Quantity of Government-Sponsored Health 🏥 Services for the Poor are Lacking 🚫. This is where Non-Governmental Organizations 💝 such as HOPE Enter the Picture. In Just This Past Year Alone, HOPE Has Launched 3 New Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼 and Child 🧒🏻 Health Centers 🏥 in Rural Villages 🛖 in Pakistan 🇵🇰. Each of These Facilities Which Are Sponsored By Yusuf Foundation Will Provide Prenatal and Infant Care to 20,000 Women and Children Per Year. We used a bit of Foresight and Strategy to Equip to These Centers with Birthing Provisions - Otherwise in Rural Villages 🛖, Women 👩🏻‍🍼 Would Often Give Birth at Home, and When Complications Occurred, Medical Facilities Were Often Too Far Away 🚑 to Traverse. In September 2023, We All Celebrated the Birth of a Baby Girl in Our Kashmir Maternal and Child Health Center - the First of Hopefully Many to Come. In Pakistan, 80% of Infant Deaths and 33% of Maternal Deaths are Preventable - We are Using These Statistics 📊 to Actively Intervene and Save as Many Lives as Possible. Every year, 15,000 babies 🐥 are Born in our Hospitals 🏥, and of Those, 3,000 are Given Life-Saving 🆘 Neonatal Treatments ❤️‍🩹. It's Been a Monumental Year for Us and We Are So Thankful to Our Supporters and to God. Altogether This Year, In Addition to Our Normal Poverty Alleviation Activities, We Played a Central Role in Relief Work for the Pakistan 🇵🇰 Flood Crisis 🌊 of 2022 which affected 33 million people and left 2.1 people homeless. We Provided 115,000 Poor People with Cooked Food 🥘, Food Rations 🍱 , Medical Aid 🚑, Mosquito Nets 🦟, Clothing 👕, Bedding 🛏️, and Even Housing during this Catastrophic Crisis that Left 1/3 of the Country under Water for Months. HOPE Uses a Calculated Interventional Approach Towards Poverty Alleviation in Pakistan 🇵🇰. We Believe that Given the Proper Foundation in Basic Human Rights such as Health 🩺 and Education 🎓, People Can Rise to Their Inherent Potential. Experience and Trust Play a Key Role in Eliciting Change in Underserved Communities and We're Humbled to Say That Throughout our 25 Years, We've Worked Very Hard to Become a Recognized Name in Poverty Alleviation in Pakistan 🇵🇰. In fact, _In 2021, We Were Awarded a Medal 🥇by Pakistan 🇵🇰 President Arif Alvi for Our Poverty Alleviation ❤️‍🩹Model in Pakistan - We Were 1 of only 2 Organizations to Receive this Distinction 💕. We Hope That You Will Join Us in Making a Difference This Giving Tuesday. Donate to our Save Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼and Infant 🐣 Lives Campaign on November 28th to Save Lives ❤️‍🩹 and Get Your Donation Matched 🌟! ✨Thank You to All Our Loyal Supporters, Both Public and Anonymous, Who Have Been With Us Each Step of the Way on This Incredible Journey. We Could Not Have Done It Without Your Help! HOPE Debuts 3/3 Maternal & Child Health Center Sponsored by Yusuf Foundation in Muzaffargarh, Punjab

Dear HOPE Friends, We Are Excited to Share With You the Debut of Yusuf Foundation's Third Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼and Child 🧒🏻 Center 🏥 in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan 🇵🇰! Please Enjoy the Accompanying Video 📽️. During the Course of 2022/2023, The HOPE Team Has Been Hard at Work 🚜 Fulfilling the Vision 🏆 of Yusuf Foundation. Yusuf Foundation Has Joined Hands 🤝🏻 With HOPE to Construct Three Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼& Child 🧒🏻 Health Centers 🏥 in Rural and Remote Villages 🛖 in Pakistan 🇵🇰. As a Developing Country, Pakistan 🇵🇰 Has Disproportionately High 📈 Maternal 🤱🏻 and Infant 🐣 Mortality Rates. This is Due to High Poverty Rates 📈 of 25% to 40% Combined with a Lack 🚫 of Government-Sponsored Health Facilities 🏥 for the Poor. Even if Government- Sponsored Facilities Do Exist, They are Few in Number 🔎 and the Quality of Care is Often Subpar 👎🏼. In Rural 🛖 and Remote Areas 🏔️ of Pakistan 🇵🇰, Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼 and Infant 🐣 Mortality Rates are Substantially Higher 📈 Than in Developed, Urban Areas 🌆. Underserved Communities Rely Heavily Upon Non-Governmental Organizations Such as HOPE to Provide Basic Healthcare 🩺 and Educational 📚 Needs. Constructing 🚜 a Healthcare Facility 🏥 Which Offers Free/Nominal Cost Services To Rural Villagers 🛖 Can Have an Immediate and Lasting Impact Upon Saving Lives 💝. Over the Course of 1.5 Years 🗓️, Yusuf Foundation Has Partnered With HOPE to Establish Three MCHCs 🏥: 🔹 Garhi Habibullah, KPK (Inaugurated 🎉 April 2023) 🔹 Mansehra, KPK (Launched 🎀 September 2023) 🔹 And Last, But Not Least, Muzaffargarh, Punjab (Debuted 🚀 October 2023) All of Yusuf Foundation's MCHC's 🩺 , Including Muzaffargarh, Are Equipped to Handle Normal 🐥 and Cesarean 🐣 Births, Essentially Making Them Mini-Hospitals 🏥. In Pakistan 🇵🇰, 33% of Maternal 👩🏻‍🍼 Deaths and 80% of Infant 👶🏻 Deaths Are Preventable 🆘. Each of Yusuf Foundation's MCHCs 🏥 Will Provide Free Healthcare 🩺 to Over 20,000 Villagers 🛖 Annually. We are Eternally Grateful 💝 to Yusuf Foundation For Generously Sponsoring Construction 🚜 and Operational Costs ❤️‍🩹 for Three MCHCs 🏥 in Underserved Villages 🛖 in Pakistan 🇵🇰. Together 🫶🏼, We Can Endeavor ❤️‍🩹 to Save the Lives 💝 of Mothers 👩🏻‍🍼 and Infants 👶🏻 and Reduce 📉 Maternal and Infant Mortality in Pakistan 🇵🇰. Yusuf Foundation Partners with HOPE USA to Launch MCHC for 20,000 Villagers in KPK

*Yusuf Foundation Partners with HOPE USA to Launch an MCHC to Serve 20,000 Villagers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan* Dear HOPE Friends, *_In early 2022, Yusuf Foundation approached HOPE USA with a vision - they wanted to create a legacy of providing quality healthcare to poor communities in Pakistan._* _Yusuf Foundation was particularly interested in helping reduce the Maternal Mortality Rate in Pakistan (currently accounting for 28% of the global total). Every 37 minutes, one woman in Pakistan dies giving birth, a total of 14,000 women annually._ _Simultaneously, Yusuf Foundation sought to decrease Pakistan's Infant Mortality Rate. According to Unicef, Pakistan has the highest Infant Mortality Rate in the world. Infants here face a 1 in 22 chance of dying within a month of birth._ *From here a vision was sparked - to construct three Maternal & Child Health Centers in underprivileged areas in Pakistan.* *Yusuf Foundation has generously partnered with HOPE USA for the construction and operation of these MCHCs which will each provide free healthcare services to approximately 20,000 needy women and children annually.* _Our video takes a look at the construction of *Yusuf Foundation's first MCHC in Garhi Habibullah, Khyper Pakhtunwa, Pakistan* over the course of 2022._ _Yusuf Foundation's Garhi Habibullah MCHC in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan launched in April 2023 (coincidentally during the holy month of Ramadan)._ *HOPE's Garhi Habibullah MCHC will provide prenatal, neonatal, outpatient, and even delivery services to the surrounding village community. It is the only healthcare facility providing free, quality healthcare to this remote and disadvantaged population.* _The entire HOPE Team would like to take this opportunity to thank Yusuf Foundation for entrusting us with the execution of this noble mission and dream._ This is a momentous occasion for us while we work towards reducing Maternal and Infant Mortality Rates in Pakistan. *80% of infant deaths and 33% of maternal deaths in Pakistan are preventable.* The HOPE Team prays for all our supporters who have enabled us to enact a multitude of poverty alleviation measures throughout Pakistan. Our special prayers are with Yusuf Foundation for their trust and the opportunity they have endowed us with. *Garhi Habibullah MCHC is the first HOPE facility of any kind (healthcare, educational, vocational) in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan.* _Yusuf Foundation's Garhi Habibullah MCHC is the eighth MCHC in HOPE's expanding network of poverty alleviation facilities in Pakistan._ We pray that this sincere gesture becomes a perpetual charity for Yusuf Foundation and brings infinite blessings to their loved ones. Ameen! We are honored to be a part of the incredible fulfillment of their vision and are grateful for their trust in our work! Warm regards, The HOPE USA Team

HOPE USA's Azad Kashmir Maternal and Child Health Center Expansion

Dear HOPE Friends, 🚜 Anonymous Donor Sponsors Expansion of HOPE USA's Azad Kashmir Maternal & Child Health Center 🏥 In September 2021, HOPE USA debuted a Maternal & Child Health Center in a remote mountain area in Azad Kashmir called Langarpura. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 This center provides free/nominal cost healthcare to 20,000 women and children annually and was funded by private donors as well as our longtime nonprofit supporter, Darul Sadaqa 786. 🔨 In April 2023 (Ramadan), an anonymous donor constructed an entire upper level for our Azad Kashmir MCHC. 🐣 This facility is now equipped for inpatient care as well as normal and cesarean deliveries, thereby having a direct impact upon Maternal and Infant Morality in the region. 💕 HOPE USA is working hard to meet the needs of the surrounding community and we are extremely grateful to our anonymous supporter for graciously funding an entire wing of this facility. 🚑 All of HOPE USA's maternal care facilities rely upon implementation of "The Three Delays" model postulated by Thaddeus and Maine in 1994. This model has been used for decades in developing countries to assess and minimize the risk of Maternal Mortality. 📈 We are persevering towards reducing Maternal Mortality in Pakistan, despite the overbearing challenges of a country burdened with poverty rates of 25 to 40 percent. 💝 We pray that our donor's selfless and life-saving gesture towards the poor becomes a perpetual charity for him and alleviates any and all hardships he is facing. Ameen!
